The Art of Handmade Fashion: Tie & Dye
Exploring colour, pattern, and craftsmanship through the art of resist dyeing.
Rooted in traditional textile practices, tie and dye transforms plain fabric into expressive patterns through the interplay of colour, folds, knots, and creativity. At Bonfire Institute of Design, students explored this hands-on technique, discovering how simple materials and processes can create distinctive textile designs.
Folding, tying and experimenting
The process began with experimenting with fabric folding, tying methods, colour combinations, and dye application. Each technique produced unexpected patterns, making every piece unique. Through hands-on exploration and experimentation, students developed an understanding of textile behaviour, colour interaction, and the creative possibilities of handmade surface design.
The beauty of imperfection
The resulting fabrics celebrate individuality, craftsmanship, and the beauty of imperfection—showing how traditional techniques can find fresh expression in contemporary fashion.
In the Handmade Fashion Zone at ARKA
These creations are curated by students and presented in the Handmade Fashion Zone, celebrating the journey from textile experimentation to creative expression. Visitors can discover the artistry behind each piece and experience how traditional techniques are reimagined through a contemporary design perspective.
