Hampi Through a Designer’s Eye

Reflections from a recent visit to Hampi.

Some see ruins. We see proportions, patterns, textures, and stories waiting to be rediscovered.

Our recent visit to Hampi became a journey through architecture, nature, and culture. From ancient stone pillars and intricate carvings to rugged boulder landscapes and the flowing Tungabhadra River, every element offered a new design perspective.

Space becomes a story. Stone becomes a material. Light becomes an architect.

Light and shadow at Virupaksha Temple

At Virupaksha Temple, the interplay of natural light and shadow revealed how illumination shapes the experience of sacred spaces.

The Queen’s Bath and the microclimate of a space

The Queen’s Bath inspired us to imagine the everyday lives of royal women. We wondered whether a saree hung out to dry might also have served as a temporary privacy screen. This led us to reflect on how shade, enclosure, and natural ventilation influence comfort and the microclimate of a space.

Architecture is about people

Our trek through Hampi reminded us that architecture is more than form and ornamentation—it is about people, their lifestyles, and their relationship with nature.

Hampi offered us more than memories; it gave us a new way of seeing. Discover more architectural treasures and design explorations at ARKA — The Design Show.
